The Brown Bag Blues

When I was in college, my friends and roommates made fun of me for my lack of culinary skills. Lean pockets, blue-box mac&cheese and scrambled eggs were pretty much the extent of my personal food pyramid.
But then I did a short stint at a food magazine, and decide it would behoove me to learn a little bit more about cooking. I read other food magazines, and started testing myself in the kitchen. I’ve since gotten to the point where I’m able to create edible food, and even enjoy myself in the process.
At least on weekends.
But Monday through Friday? Forget about it. I’m so exhausted by the time I come home from work at 10 or so at night that the last thing I want to do is boil water, slice veggies and heat up the oven. I don’t even have the motivation to make myself a sandwich. Yeah. Too lazy to slap some mayo, spinach, cheese and turkey on a couple slices of bread and call it a day.
“I’ll save time by buying lunch tomorrow,” I tell myself. But let’s be honest, it never actually saves time. When I buy lunch, I have to walk to a deli, pick something out, wait for them to make it and walk it back. It’s really counterproductive (and increasingly expensive) when I think about it that way.
So I know it’s not exactly January 1 or anything, but I’m going to make a new resolution for 2010: I’m going to start bringing my lunch to work. How many of you already brown bag it?

I love flip flops. As far as I'm concerned, they're the best thing since sliced bread. And let's be honest, sliced bread isn't all that great anyway. I mean, you can cut the loaf yourself at home -- so flip flops might even be better than the pre-packaged whole wheat in your refrigerator...more
